C'est en 1936 que le jeune frère Basile, du monastère Saint-Pantéléimon au mont Athos, se fait connaître de la communauté scientifique en publiant « La doctrine ascétique et théologique de saint Grégoire Palamas », premier d'une longue série d'articles et de recherches. Après être passé par l'étude de Grégoire de Nysse, de Basile le Grand et de tant d'autres, Mgr Krivochéine édite ainsi successivement les « Catéchèses » de saint Syméon le Nouveau Théologien, dans la collection des « Sources chrétiennes », puis une biographie fondamentale du mystique byzantin. À une époque où l'on commence à peine à redécouvrir les trésors du patrimoine des Pères de l'Église, il bénéficie du fonds exceptionnel que met à sa disposition la « république monastique ». Le présent volume regroupe la majeure partie des études patristiques et spirituelles de l'« évêque cultivé idéal » (l'expression est d'Alexandre Schmemann), dont on a pu dire que la « vraie patrie, ici sur terre, était la foi des Pères »...

It was in 1936 that the young Brother Basil of the Saint Panteleimon monastery on Mount Athos, made a name for himself in the scientific community when he published ‘The Ascetic and Theological Doctrine of Saint Gregory Palamas', the first in a long series of articles and extensive research. After making studies of Gregory of Nyssa, Basil the Great and so many others, Brother Basil, now Mgr Krivochéine, edited the ‘Catechetics' of Saint Symeon the New Theologian in the ‘Sources chrétiennes' collection, followed by a fundamental biography of the Byzantine mystic. At a time when we had scarcely begun to rediscover the treasures of the Fathers of the Church, he took advantage of the exceptional collection put at his disposal by the ‘monastic republic'.
